Una Motivation Letter per l’Estonia

28 05 2008

Dear BESTies,

There is a time for everyone to try something new in life and there’s a time to demonstrate what someone is capable of doing.

In my opinion, the BEST Engineering Competition is the “best” way to do these things. I’m an Italian student of Computer Science Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. I have been hearing for the past three years of the BEST Events, however I have never paid much attention on it. This year, instead, something new happened: when my university sent me an e-mail about your programme, I jumped on my chair: «This is a good opportunity to have a good time and to meet a lot of people» I thought «and at the same time to improve my skills».

When I read that the criteria for the selection of participants was a motivation letter, I jolted with panic: «How could I capture the attention of people who do not know me only with a letter?! I’m an engineer, not a writer!» I said to myself. You should know that here in Italy engineers are seen as people who can do well one thing only: what they have been studying! And, if you ask them to improvise something, there’s no hope!

I could tell you «I’m a magician with computers» and I could add «I’m a good planner». But I will not do that, I would be lying: I’m a computer science engineer like many others. I affirm instead that I love challenges, I can socialize easily and I love to travel. One of the reasons for which I’d like to participate to your event is that it will be in Estonia: I’ve always dreamt to visit Northern Europe, I’ve been reading a bit about your country and I’ve seen a lot of pictures about it on Flickr! Why shouldn’t I take advantage of both a good experience and a good trip?

I read that in Estonia you have many IT-solutions that we don’t have in Italy: you have E-Government, E-elections, E-courses, while here in Italy there’s only an experimental e-course held at my university, and I think that for my future I can only gain profit from discovering your country.

I can bring with me Italian humour and Italian culture and I’m sure I’d come back with a enormous desire to return there.

I hope to have your notices soon,

Best regards

Daniele Zanni
